Calling All Artists To Socrates Park Open Call!
By Josephine Lembard
Socrates Sculpture Park is currently inviting artists to submit proposals for a chance to qualify for the Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF), an annual residency program and The Socrates Annual exhibition. It will be awarded to 15 artists, allowing them to produce and exhibit their sculptures in the park.
A wonderful opportunity, EAF’18 recipients will also receive a $5,000 production grant to help fund their project, and full access to the resources and fabrication facilities of the Park’s outdoor studio during the residency period of May 2018 – September 2018.
The completed works will become part of The Socrates Annual, an outdoor exhibition opening in October 2018 and run till March 2019. Applicants are encouraged to visit the beautiful, waterfront space and take time to learn of the history of the park.
The park, itself, is free to the public and open all year round between 9am until sundown. It has offered free art-making workshops for the neighborhood youth since 1990.
Today, programs are no longer only restricted to an age group. Kids, Teens, and Adults educational offerings are available, each with their own unique lessons with topics ranging from designing kites to creating sculptures.
In addition to the production grant as well as studio access, Socrates will produce an electronic publication to accompany the exhibition, available free online, and a printed version will be given to EAF’18 artists. While administrative support may be provided for additional fundraising or securing contributions, artists should propose projects within the parameters of the grant.
Artists will be responsible for their own fabrication, transportation (if necessary) and installation of their works. Socrates will provide some limited technical and installation assistance during a three-week installation period between M-F, 10AM – 6PM.Specifics of assistance will be discussed with once each artist is selected. This proposal call is only open to those who are not in enrolled into an educational program. Those who have applied in previous years are welcome as long as they have not been exhibited previously.
Please send all submissions to: https://socratessculpturepark.submittable.com/submit by Monday, December 18, 2017. Artists will be notified in April 2018.
