It’s a Beautiful Bloom in the Neighborhood

Spring is here, and in turn, we’re all here for it! Whether you’re working on your fitness or going for a casual stroll, you’re bound to see some fresh florals along the way. If this past year taught us anything, it’s the importance of ensuring we make time to stop and smell the flowers. Well, this spring, take that advice literally and be sure to take some photos while you do exactly that!

In Astoria Park, you’ll find a gorgeous, green lawn backdrop by the track and breathtaking murals under the Hellgate Bridge with scattered florals throughout the landscape. Test your photography skills by capturing and recreating the classic Astoria Park photo: a branch forefront with bridges in the distance. Don’t forget to give it your own unique twist!

On the other side of town, we have Rainey Park on Vernon Boulevard. The walkway is lined with benches, flowered trees and tulips, all with a waterfront view to boot. While you’re in the area, keep on adding color to your life and stop by Welling Court Mural Project to admire their world-renown murals.

While at Rainey Park, you’ll be opposite Roosevelt Island which is now welcoming visitors to enjoy the annual cherry blossom bloom. Amy Smith, Roosevelt Island Operating Coordinator and Astoria resident, says April is typically the best month for the full cherry blossom experience. Typically, the island hosts an annual festival in honor of the bloom, though that won’t be the case this year due to the pandemic. Nonetheless, the trees will still be in bloom awaiting your arrival!

If you do decide to venture here, Amy suggests taking the ferry, which is “a lovely option as you’re able to enjoy the warming weather and beautiful skyline views.” Other means of transportation include the Q102 bus, F Train and crossing the Roosevelt Island Bridge.

After you’ve explored and are all blossomed-out, don’t forget to choose your favorite spring photo and submit it to our Give Me Spring photography contest by emailing us at [email protected].

We are accepting spring submissions through June 11th. Good Luck!
